Senior Director Search: Management Consultancy in China (Case Study)

Ginkgo Search Partners Professional Services Practice Group was retained for an executive search mandate to find and attract a seasoned executive to be a Senior Director in China. 


Our client is one of Europes largest management consulting firms. The company focuses on strategy, marketing, pricing and sales, and has served more than 100 Global Fortune 500 companies in creating top- and bottom-line growth strategies.


Background of the position

To further strengthen the China organization our client was looking for an outstanding candidate at the level of Senior Director for their office in China. The executive was expected to be able to manage large projects and execute business development initiatives in cooperation with the international partners of the management consulting firm. The candidate should have a strong entrepreneurial mindset and a potential to develop into a partner role.


For this executive search assignment we were searching for a well-rounded Chinese candidate with several years of management experience in a leading management consulting firm. The candidate was expected to have the ability to develop clients within the Chinese market. Further requirements included proven expertise in strategy consulting approaches combined with strong project management skills.


Besides the candidate should have gained experience in working on sales and marketing-related projects within a specific industry. We were looking for a bright conceptual and fast learner able to quickly assess a situation and generate new insights and actionable ideas combined with superior quantitative and qualitative analytical skills combined with an entrepreneurial spirit to shape the future of the company in the Chinese market.

Executive search approach

The major challenge for our executive search team was to identify a senior candidate with a strong network and proven sales record with state-owned enterprises as well as understanding of the Western management culture and a good command of business English to be able to communicate with the international partners of the firm.


The primary target of our search was to attract candidates from both mid-sized and large international management and strategy consulting firms with an established office presence and management team in Mainland China. 5 candidates were shortlisted to meet our client's global CEO for the final interview round in Beijing. 

Successful placement

The successful candidate is a Chinese management consultant with an MBA from a leading US business school and years of management experience in one of the big 4 global management consultancies.


Our candidate was interested in our client’s business approach and unique positioning in marketing and pricing strategy. Besides he was attracted by the opportunity to develop into a partner position. The candidate showed a high level of motivation to achieve the business goals in China and the client was delighted to have a strong consulting leader on board.
